"Wowie….we were mighty impressed with Basu and his Homestyle Indian Cuisine once we had prepared this mighty meal. This wasn’t no Tasty Bite pre-packaged Indian mush. This was the real freakin’ deal. Basu’s recipes are superb, packed with flavor, and best yet: are totally vegan. Each sauce is authentic, fresh, and made with lots of love. He really has done a fantastic job of bringing his homestyle flair to the mainstream public without sacrificing traditional flavor. The other best part about Basu’s Indian grub is you don’t even have to make it yourself because Whole Foods will make it all for you. Like I mentioned earlier, Whole Foods offer’s Basu’s Homestyle Indian Cuisine in their hot bar in 4 states, mostly in California. They’ll lovingly prepare Basu’s delicious creations and all you have to do is show up, scoop whatever you choose onto your plate, make your purchase and enjoy! Basu’s Homestyle Indian Cusine gets my “Yummylicious Stamp of Approval.” Fo sho. Thanks Basu for letting us play with your tasty creations! We very much enjoyed the experience!"
"I should make it clear as I overemphasize how amazing it SMELLS, that I do not mean to underemphasize how amazing it TASTES, which is AMAZING. Like, the tastiest thing to come out of my kitchen in a long time, vegan or non." -VeganSaurus
Thank you for sending these sauces to my husband and I. We were very excited about receiving the package and couldn’t wait to get started on making some tasty meals.
The first (and my favorite) curry we made was an Aloo Gobi, using the Masala sauce. The spices really stood out and were balanced in flavor. We had it with some saffron rice, vegetable samosas (we had these already) with the tamarind chutney, and wheat tortillas. The only possible way to improve this sauce would be if you offered a spicier version or maybe add mild, medium, etc. to the packaging so people know the level of spiciness.
The second meal we made was a vegetable stew using the Vindaloo w/ Basil sauce. This sauce was very flavorful and aromatic. We accompanied it with a quinoa/brown rice mix and some tortillas.
We look forward to making more curries with the remaining sauces in the days or weeks to come. Thanks again Basu’s Homestyle.
I was finally able to post a review of my taste-test! Thanks again for the opportunity to taste your awesome products. Can’t wait to taste them again when they eventually get up here to Northern California! You really do have a great product that can be appreciated to the max by both vegans AND non-vegans alike. Have fun and good luck! - Skyloader
Thanks again for giving me the opportunity to taste test your delicious recipes. I meant every word I wrote. Cheers! VeggieGail
Basu and Robin Ghosh of Basu's Homestyle Indian Cuisine are a father-and-son team, whose passion for creating great-tasting West Bengali Indian dishes is evident in every delectable bite. Inspired by his family’s recipes and authentic cooking methods, Basu skillfully applies his engineering discipline to his culinary skills, refining each recipe again and again until it's just right. His epicurean precision is flawless, and it's no wonder he is thought of by many as the Beethoven of Indian cooking.
His latest challenge was to bust the popular myth that vegan food cannot be great-tasting. (A myth I'm fond of busting myself!) So when I was contacted to become a taste tester for Basu's, I couldn't have been more excited.
This latest cooking adventure took place because of a wonderful offer I took advantage of courtesy of Basu’s Homestyle, a new Indian food service here in Los Angeles. Basu’s make delicious traditional masala’s (sauces) that you can use to create an amazing Indian meal in very little time. As of this writing, Los Angelenos can
try Basu’s yummy offerings at the Whole Foods hot bar on Santa Monica & Fairfax (and they plan to expand to more locations in the near future). Mr. Meaner over at Quarrygirl.com
did an excellent write up of the prepped Indian goodies by Basu’s that
you can now get at Whole Foods, including: basil vindaloo with peas and
mushrooms, tofu apple masala, vegan curried beef with basil vindaloo,
channa dal and peanut masala with roasted red potatoes. Oh man, it all
looks so good, check it out here.
While I haven’t tried the ready-made options at Whole Foods yet, I
was lucky enough to take Basu’s Homestyle up on their generous free
taste-test of their masalas and other goodies. At first figured I’d
just serve the sauces over rice but they gave me so much great stuff (Masala Sauce, Peanut Masala Sauce, Chana Dal, Tamarind Chutney and Saffron Rice) that I was immediately inspired to cook a real meal with it.
Here at Rancho Las Flores, we have a family dinner every week which includes our extended family, various friends, and anyone else we’re entertaining.
Over the course of the last few months, about half of our number have gone vegetarian, with the majority going Vegan. This has, in turn, made cooking for the family a challenge. We've had several vegetarian curries which went down well, so when Basu suggested we try his dishes, everyone was excited.
How to sum up the reaction the family had to Basu's food? Giddy? Excited? Wildly enthusiastic? All of the above!!
The big hits were the peanut masala sauce over roasted potatoes (they vanished almost immediately), the vindaloo sauce (several people said it would make gravel appetizing), and the tamarind chutney was a huge hit (there were lots of comments about its richness and complexity and how well it went with the other sauces). I am particularly fond of the pineapple chutney - without a doubt one of the greatest chutneys I have ever eaten.
What struck everyone was how balanced and deep the flavors were. I've been a fan of curry for more than 30 years, and Basu's dishes are world class. I can unreservedly recommend them. Your stomach and your family will thank you.
