Here at Rancho Las Flores, we have a family dinner every week which includes our extended family, various friends, and anyone else we’re entertaining.
Over the course of the last few months, about half of our number have gone vegetarian, with the majority going Vegan. This has, in turn, made cooking for the family a challenge. We've had several vegetarian curries which went down well, so when Basu suggested we try his dishes, everyone was excited.
How to sum up the reaction the family had to Basu's food? Giddy? Excited? Wildly enthusiastic? All of the above!!
The big hits were the peanut masala sauce over roasted potatoes (they vanished almost immediately), the vindaloo sauce (several people said it would make gravel appetizing), and the tamarind chutney was a huge hit (there were lots of comments about its richness and complexity and how well it went with the other sauces). I am particularly fond of the pineapple chutney - without a doubt one of the greatest chutneys I have ever eaten.
What struck everyone was how balanced and deep the flavors were. I've been a fan of curry for more than 30 years, and Basu's dishes are world class. I can unreservedly recommend them. Your stomach and your family will thank you.
